Broward County Jail Inmate Search

The Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) Department of Detention operates four jail facilities serving all of Broward County, from Fort Lauderdale to Deerfield Beach and the West. BSO's Central Intake Bureau processes approximately 40,000 arrests each year from Broward County law enforcement agencies. This page shows exactly where your person is likely held, how to search for them, and what to do in the critical 24 hours after arrest.

Broward Sheriff's Office, Department of Detention

The Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) is a full-service constitutional office serving Broward County. Unlike Miami-Dade, where the corrections department is a county agency separate from the sheriff, Broward's sheriff runs the jail system directly through its Department of Detention. This is the standard structure for Florida counties.

Where Broward County Inmates Are Held

All arrestees are first processed at the Central Intake Bureau in downtown Fort Lauderdale. After booking, classification, and medical screening, inmates are housed at the facility matching their custody level, gender, and any special needs.

Main Jail Bureau (Central Intake)

BSO's central detention facility and primary booking location. The Main Jail is a maximum-security facility for adult males, holding high-risk offenders, violent offenders, and inmates whose charges require stricter supervision. The Central Intake Bureau (CIB) on the same campus handles all booking, pre-magistrate holding, and court transportation for the county, roughly 40,000 arrests per year. Every person arrested in Broward County starts here.

What to Do Next

Once you have confirmed your loved one is in BSO custody, these are the four things to handle immediately.

Contact a Licensed Bail Agent

Most misdemeanors and lower felonies get bond set under Broward's bond schedule at booking. A Florida-licensed bail bond agent charges 10% of bond as a non-refundable premium under DFS rules.

⚖️

Secure Legal Representation

An attorney at first appearance can argue for reduced bond. The Broward Public Defender's Office serves qualifying defendants, application filed at first appearance.

📅

Attend First Appearance

First appearance happens within 24 hours at the Judicial Complex, 201 SE 6th Street. The judge confirms probable cause, reads charges, and sets or modifies bond.

📞

Set Up Calls and Video Visits

Register for BSO video visitation before your scheduled slot. Each inmate gets ~2 hours per week, available daily 8am to 7:45pm. Create a prepaid phone account through the BSO contracted provider.

Frequently Asked Questions, Broward County Jail

Booking at the Central Intake Bureau typically takes 4 to 8 hours for misdemeanors and 8 to 14 hours for felonies due to fingerprinting, warrant checks through FCIC and NCIC, medical screening, and classification. The inmate usually appears in the BSO arrest search within 2 to 6 hours of booking completion.
Depends on gender, charges, and custody classification. High-risk males stay at Main Jail Bureau. Medium-security male pretrial detainees go to the Joseph V. Conte Facility in Pompano Beach. Males with special medical or mental health needs, along with protective-custody females and female juveniles, go to North Broward Bureau. Medium/maximum inmates (male or female) may go to Paul Rein Detention Facility.
BSO uses off-site video visitation for most standard visits. You must be on the inmate's approved list, and each inmate is assigned about two hours of video visitation per week. Video visits are available daily from 8:00 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. Attorneys can arrange private in-person consultations directly with the facility.
BSO contracts with a third-party commissary deposit service. Deposits can be made online, by phone, at on-site kiosks in jail lobbies, or via money order with the inmate's name and booking number on the money order. Inmates use deposited funds for commissary, hygiene items, and phone credits.
Most misdemeanors and lower felonies have bond set automatically at booking under the Broward bond schedule. For higher felonies and offenses not on the schedule, bond is set at first appearance within 24 hours. A Florida-licensed bail bond agent charges a 10% non-refundable premium per Florida Department of Financial Services rules. You can also post a cash bond directly with the Clerk of Courts at the Judicial Complex.
Yes, standard mail is accepted and inspected. Mail must be handwritten or typed in black or blue ink only, with the inmate's full legal name and booking number on the envelope. Addressing varies by facility (Main Jail, Conte, North Broward, Paul Rein), check the BSO website for the correct mail address. Do not send cash, checks, gift cards, or packages, use the commissary deposit service for funds.
After bond is posted at the Clerk of Courts, release processing typically takes 4 to 10 hours depending on facility workload and time of day. Weekends, late-night postings, and holidays can extend this to 12 to 24 hours. Holds (probation violations, ICE detainers, or out-of-county warrants) must be resolved before release.
Broward criminal cases are handled by the 17th Judicial Circuit. Felonies and first appearances are at the Broward County Judicial Complex, 201 SE 6th Street, Fort Lauderdale. Misdemeanors and civil cases are handled at the regional courthouses in Deerfield Beach, Hollywood, and Plantation. Case records are available through the Broward Clerk of Courts online at browardclerk.org.
BSO holds pretrial defendants and anyone with a Broward sentence of 364 days or less. Anyone sentenced to more than one year on a state felony is transferred to the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC), searchable at fdc.myflorida.com. Federal charges result in Bureau of Prisons custody, searchable at bop.gov/inmateloc. ICE detainees are held at the Broward Transitional Center or Krome Service Processing Center, searchable at locator.ice.gov.
