The Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) Department of Detention operates four jail facilities serving all of Broward County, from Fort Lauderdale to Deerfield Beach and the West. BSO's Central Intake Bureau processes approximately 40,000 arrests each year from Broward County law enforcement agencies. This page shows exactly where your person is likely held, how to search for them, and what to do in the critical 24 hours after arrest.

The Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) is a full-service constitutional office serving Broward County. Unlike Miami-Dade, where the corrections department is a county agency separate from the sheriff, Broward's sheriff runs the jail system directly through its Department of Detention. This is the standard structure for Florida counties.

All arrestees are first processed at the Central Intake Bureau in downtown Fort Lauderdale. After booking, classification, and medical screening, inmates are housed at the facility matching their custody level, gender, and any special needs.
BSO's central detention facility and primary booking location. The Main Jail is a maximum-security facility for adult males, holding high-risk offenders, violent offenders, and inmates whose charges require stricter supervision. The Central Intake Bureau (CIB) on the same campus handles all booking, pre-magistrate holding, and court transportation for the county, roughly 40,000 arrests per year. Every person arrested in Broward County starts here.
Opened in May 1999, the $25.5 million Conte Facility is a medium-security direct-supervision jail for male pretrial detainees. Named for Deputy Joseph Conte who lost his life in the line of duty in 1979, the facility is known for its program-intensive approach including 30-day substance abuse programs. Capacity 1,328 with 231 staff. The direct-supervision design places deputies inside the housing units for continuous interaction with inmates.
A special-needs detention center at minimum to medium security, operating since 1979. Houses male offenders, protective-custody female offenders, and female juveniles. Primary focus is mentally ill, medically infirm, and other special-needs inmates. Older structures on the site have been replaced with modernized facilities over the years. Capacity approximately 1,200.
BSO's newest facility, opened February 2004. A $36.6 million direct-supervision jail covering 257,790 square feet in two four-story towers. Medium/maximum security housing male and female inmates in separate areas. Capacity 1,020. The In-Custody Behavioral Services Division runs Substance Abuse and Life Skills programs here. Includes an OB-GYN clinic for pregnant inmates.
Broward is served by the 17th Judicial Circuit, one of the busiest in Florida. First appearance hearings happen at the main judicial complex in Fort Lauderdale within 24 hours of arrest as required by Florida Rule 3.130.
