Miami-Dade County Jail Inmate Search

The Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department (MDCR) operates the 8th-largest jail system in the United States. MDCR books approximately 114,000 people each year across its main facilities in Miami, Doral, and unincorporated Miami-Dade. This page tells you exactly where your person is likely held, how to search for them, and how to handle the first 24 hours after an arrest.

Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department

Miami-Dade is unique in Florida. Instead of the sheriff running the jail system (as in most Florida counties), Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department is a county department that reports to the Miami-Dade Mayor's Office. This structure dates to the 1970s when the Miami-Dade Charter separated corrections from the Public Safety Department. The sheriff's office and corrections badges look identical because they were one agency decades ago.

Pre-Trial Detention Center (PTDC)

How to Find Someone Just Arrested in Miami-Dade

1

Search the MDCR Inmate Locator

Go to miamidade.gov/Apps/mdcr/inmateSearch/. Enter the first and last name (first three characters of each is enough). The search covers all MDCR facilities simultaneously. Results show current facility, booking number, charges, and bond amount. Records usually appear within 2 to 6 hours of arrest.

2

Note the Booking Number and Charges

Write down the booking number, the listed charges, and the bond amount. You will need this for every subsequent call (bond agent, attorney, commissary deposits). Bond amounts under the Miami-Dade bond schedule are set automatically at booking for most non-violent offenses. Higher-level felonies require a judge to set bond at first appearance.

3

Contact a Licensed Florida Bail Bond Agent

If a bond is set, a Florida-licensed bail bond agent can post bond for a 10 percent non-refundable premium under Florida Department of Financial Services rules. A $10,000 bond costs $1,000 through a bondsman. The bondsman files the bond paperwork at the Miami-Dade Clerk of Courts, and the inmate is then processed for release at TGK.

4

Get First Appearance Information

Under Florida Rule 3.130, first appearance must happen within 24 hours of arrest. In Miami-Dade, first appearances happen at the Richard E. Gerstein Justice Building at 1351 NW 12th Street. The judge confirms probable cause, reads charges, sets or adjusts bond, and advises the defendant of their rights. An attorney present at first appearance can argue for a reduced bond.

5

Register for Phone Calls and VINELink Alerts

MDCR uses Securus Technologies for inmate phone calls. Create a prepaid account at securustech.net before the first outbound call, otherwise the call will not complete. Also register with Florida VINELink at vinelink.vineapps.com, MDCR participates in VINE, so you will get automatic release and transfer alerts.

Miami-Dade Courts and First Appearance

Miami-Dade is served by the 11th Judicial Circuit of Florida. Circuit Court handles felonies, civil matters over $50,000, family law, and juvenile cases. County Court handles misdemeanors, DUIs, and civil cases under $50,000.

What to Do Next

Once you have confirmed your loved one is in MDCR custody, these are the four things to do immediately.

Contact a Bail Bond Agent

A Florida-licensed bail bond agent can post bond for 10% of the amount. The Miami-Dade bond schedule sets bond automatically for most misdemeanors and lower felonies right after booking.

⚖️

Secure Legal Representation

An attorney at first appearance can argue for a reduced bond or release on recognizance. The Public Defender serves those who qualify financially, application filed at first appearance.

📅

Attend First Appearance

First appearance must happen within 24 hours of arrest at the Richard E. Gerstein Justice Building. Confirm the time with the Circuit Court clerk or the booking paperwork.

💵

Fund Commissary & Phones

MDCR inmates receive commissary funds through the contracted deposit service. Phone calls are through Securus (securustech.net); register before the first call.

Frequently Asked Questions, Miami-Dade County Jail

Booking at Pre-Trial Detention Center typically takes 4 to 8 hours for misdemeanor arrests and 8 to 14 hours for felony arrests due to classification, fingerprinting (AFIS), warrant checks, medical screening, and housing assignment. The inmate usually appears in the MDCR online search within 2 to 6 hours of booking completion.
Metro West Detention Center is at 13850 NW 41st Street, Doral, FL 33178. It is MDCR's largest facility with 3,098 beds. The phone is (786) 263-5100. The facility is in western Miami-Dade County near the Florida Turnpike and SR 836.
MDCR uses primarily remote video visitation. You must be on the inmate's approved master visitation list. Register with MDCR's contracted video provider through the MDCR website, then schedule sessions. In-person visits are limited and require a valid photo ID for adults and a birth certificate plus school ID for minors 17 and under.
MDCR uses a contracted third-party deposit service (currently Keefe Commissary / Access Corrections depending on the provider arrangement). Deposits can be made online, by phone, or at a kiosk. Inmates use deposited funds for commissary, hygiene, and phone credits. Check the MDCR website for the current deposit provider and minimums.
For most misdemeanors and lower-tier felonies, bond is set automatically at booking under the Miami-Dade bond schedule. For offenses not on the schedule and any felony where the judge must review, bond is set at first appearance within 24 hours. A Florida-licensed bail bond agent charges a 10% non-refundable premium per Florida Department of Financial Services rules. You can also post a cash bond directly with the Clerk of Courts, refundable after the case closes regardless of outcome.
Standard first-class mail is accepted at MDCR facilities and is inspected before delivery. Include the inmate's full legal name and booking number on the envelope. Addressing varies by facility; check the MDCR website for the correct mail address at Metro West, PTDC, TGK, or Women's Detention Center. Do not send cash, checks, gift cards, or packages; use the official commissary deposit service for funds.
After bond is posted through the Clerk of Courts, release processing happens at TGK and typically takes 4 to 12 hours depending on facility workload and time of day. Weekends, holidays, and late-night postings can extend this to 16 to 24 hours. You can call TGK's release desk at (786) 263-5362 to check on timing. An active hold (probation violation, ICE detainer, or out-of-county warrant) must be resolved before release.
MDCR uses Securus Technologies for inmate phone calls. Inmates place outbound calls only; you cannot call into the jail to reach an inmate. Before the first call, register and fund a prepaid account at securustech.net using the inmate's booking number. Video visits are also available through the same platform at additional cost.
Miami-Dade cases are handled by the 11th Judicial Circuit of Florida. Felonies and first appearances are at the Richard E. Gerstein Justice Building at 1351 NW 12th Street, Miami. Misdemeanors, traffic, and DUI cases are handled in County Court. Case records are available through the Clerk of Circuit and County Court online at miamidadeclerk.gov.
MDCR holds pretrial defendants and anyone sentenced to 364 days or less. Anyone sentenced to more than one year on a state charge is transferred to the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC), search at fdc.myflorida.com. Federal charges result in Bureau of Prisons custody, search at bop.gov/inmateloc. In Miami, federal detainees are often held at FDC Miami (the federal Miami detention center, different from Florida's FDC). ICE detainees are held at Krome Service Processing Center, searchable at locator.ice.gov.
